SHERBROOKE, Que. – The University of Guelph Gryphons continued their domination of Canadian Interuniversity Sport cross country, as the men’s and women’s teams captured their respective championships at the Club de golf de Sherbrooke on Saturday.
The Gryphon women claimed their sixth straight team title, while the men captured the banner for the fifth year in a row. With the double-championship, the Gryphons increased their CIS-record for team titles to 17, four more than second-place Victoria.
Guelph scored 33-points to win the women’s championship after placing five finishers in the top 11 of the race, but could not sweep the podium as the women’s individual title went to fourth year McMaster University runner Jessica Pearo of Richmond Hill, Ont., who finished the 5-km course in a time of 17-minutes 40-seconds. Guelph’s Rachel Cliff of Vancouver, earned the silver finishing 10-seconds off the pace, while Moncton, NB native Genviève Lalonde was third in a time of 18-minutes 14-seconds.
The race between Pearo and Cliff was close until the final 750-metres when Pearo pulled away from her provincial rival.
“I was just trying to hold it together and remain consistent in the last little bit,” said Pearo. “It was pretty muddy just before we came downhill at the end, so I was just trying to maintain what momentum I had.”
On the men’s side, a pair of podium finishes powered Guelph to the team title. Running in his final CIS race, Kyle Boorsma of Guelph, Ont. earned his first individual championship edging out teammate Alex Genest of Lac-aux-Sables, Que., for gold in a time of 31-minutes 53-seconds. Genest, a former member of the host Sherbrooke Vert & Or ended the race 14-seconds behind Boorsma. The only non-Gryphon to make it to the podium was fourth year Regina Cougar standout Kelly Wiebe of Swift Current, Sask. who earned the bronze with a 32-minute 15-second performance.
After finishing second at each of the previous two CIS championships Boorsma explained how he was able to pull away from the pack midway through the race.
“Kelly and I were close through the first couple of laps, but he made his move and threw it down coming up a hill on the third lap, and I matched him,” said Boorsma. “I decided that I would throw it right back at him and he couldn’t respond, so at that point I knew I just had to keep my foot on the gas pedal and go hard to the end.”
Guelph’s scorers went 1-2-4-6 and 11 in the race en route to an impressive 24 point score. The Windsor Lancers finished second with 57-points.
“We have won a lot of team titles over the years, but this is probably our most athletic squad we’ve ever had,” added CIS coach of the year Dave Scott Thomas of Guelph. “Kyle has been on the podium twice before, but it’s great to see him finally finish with a gold.”
