Maella Hodgson Has Range! From the 400m to the XC Trails

"At the beginning of the season, I was dealing with a foot injury, so I really had to adjust my season's goals. I ended up leaving my time related goals behind and just focused on having fun and feeling good. I ended up learning how to use blocks and had some fun experimenting with the 400m. This was a really valuable experience for me since it exposed me to a lot of different forms of training that I likely wouldn't have done otherwise."

As a distance runner, Hodgson still qualified for the senior girls 400m finals at the Provincial Championships and despite her setbacks she made the podium in the 800m and 3000m.

"I just really love high school track because there is so much hype around it. It is really cool to see everyone enjoying the sport."

This enjoyment and love for running and competition is enhanced through Hodgson's training group at Ocean Athletics.

"I love my training group. We have so much fun not only on the track, but also in our post practice soccer and ultimate matches. Usually I can't find enough girls at my school to have a full team, but recently more girls have joined our club so that has been great! Not to mention our group is steadily getting bigger because of our amazing coach, Ted. He is super supportive and truly believes in each and every one of us. I am so grateful for him."

Now as we are in the midst of the 2023 cross country season, Hodgson is on a mission. Already this season she has won the Festival of Cross Country and Vancouver Spirit Run in her respective age division, but there is still more to come.

"I'm aiming to get on Team BC for ACXC this year because I'd really like to have another shot at the Mooney's Bay course to see how much I've improved from last year."

With that Hodgson leaves us with some parting advice.

"Be balanced and make sure running isn't your entire identity. It's really important to have other interests because if something comes up like an injury and you can't run for a while, it can significantly impact your mental health. Make sure you have a fulfilling life outside of your sport and always prioritize fun!"
