Talk about a great start to New Balance Nationals Indoor.
Issaquah (WA) High freshman Julia David-Smith opened up festivities at the Armory in New York on Friday with a can-you-believe-it effort in the Emerging Elite 2-mile run, dropping a US No. 4 time of 10:41.47 to win over a field that included three others under 10:47.
To put that in perspective, that performance would have put David-Smith in the top 20 girls nationally last year indoors, and it would have given her a 13th-place finish in last year's race.
The time may even hold its own against some of the top runners in Saturday's two-mile championship.
But David-Smith likely had other motivations in mind. The younger sister of Camila David-smith, a freshman distance runner at the University of Washington, she broke a 40-year-old record at Issaquah held by Deanna Coleman stretching back to 1978.
Coleman's former school record in the 3200m was 10:42.6 (converted to 10:46.3 in the 2-mile). David-Smith also bested her sister's high school 3200m best of 10:44.50.
David-Smith was 13th at NXR Northwest this past season and won her first KingCo League cross country championship in a personal best 18:04.59.
