On Saturday, January 26, Team Canada won three of four events at the 2013 North American Central American and Caribbean Cross Country Championships (NACAC) in Mandeville, Jamaica. The three teams: senior women and junior men and women won their team events while senior men finished second overall.
"It was a terrific day for the Canadian team here in Mandeville, Jamaica; we could not be more thrilled. I'm especially pleased for our senior women, notably Natasha (Fraser) and Rachel (Cliff), who completely rocked the race," said team head coach Dave Christiani. He adds, "All of our entries made us proud today. The NACAC Championships are always a valuable experience for juniors leading up to the World Champs."
The women's senior team (18 points) won with a significant lead over the second place United States (26 points). Natasha Fraser and Rachel Cliff finished one-two in 21:07 and 21:35 respectively. "I am so happy to be part of the winning Canadian team; such an amazing experience," said an excited Fraser.
Canada took the junior men's title with 31 points over the United States who had a team total of 35. Ryan Sleiman of Kingsville, Ont., was the top Canadian finisher in fourth with 19:18. On his heels was Troy Smith of Grimsby, Ont., in fifth in 19:19. Wright said, “The Junior men battled a very strong team from Mexico who took the race out fast and made it challenging for both Canada and the U.S.”
The senior men finished second to the Americans; although they felt that they could have won that event too, making a clean sweep of the meet. Cameron Levins said, “I think the team is a little bummed with how things went, but this is definitely just fuel for the fire. I know everyone will be ready for Poland (IAAF World Cross Country Championships). I am a little frustrated with my own performance. I know I ran hard and am fit, but I will prove it through the rest of the season. I learn from every race, and I am both smarter and better for having taken second.”
The first race of the day was the junior women's 4-kilometre race. Team Canada won with 17 points ahead of the United States who were second with 21. Leading the way for the Canadian junior women was Madeline Yungblut who was second in 14:18. "It was a challenging course but overall it felt really good." Yungblut adds," It was an awesome experience and we worked really well as a team". Right behind her were a duo of Torontonians, Gabriela Stafford finished in third in 14:25 while Madeline McDonald was fourth in 14:28.
Asked how the day went National Cross Country Co-ordinator, Thelma Wright said, “It was an awesome day and the course was really technical and tough. It was harder than Vancouver’s (Athletics Canada National Championships course) for sure even with the distance. Each lap was 2025 metres so the junior girls ran 4050m, senior women and junior men ran 6075m and the senior men 8100m. The course was very technical with lots of turns, two steep hills up and one down per lap and lots of side hill running, with one good downhill fairway between 1k and 1.5k on each lap.”
An elated Rachel Cliff said as much, "In terms of terrain and weather it was one of the harder cross country races I’ve ever run. The course was on long, on uneven grass and was basically non-stop rolling or steep hills. Cliff continued, "It made it very hard to find a rhythm. We were told going in it was going to be a technical course, but I don’t think any of us were expecting that!
Wright said, “As it stands Natasha has earned 100% IAAF funding with her win and with six full teams in that race the junior men are assured of 100% IAAF funding for four competitors (shared throughout the team).”
Junior and senior women only had five and four complete teams finish so with the IAAF rule being that six must finish, that means their win at NACAC is tempered in that they can earn IAAF support retroactively should they finish in the top half of the field as a team at Worlds.
Wright added, “Truly a Team effort out there today in all the races and for anyone wanting to support the National Cross Country Team, donations can be made here.”
