Council Rock Kiwanis Invitational
Council Rock North
The wind was kicking strong, but the sun was shining and the performances at the Council Rock Kiwanis Invitational suggested that most teams have taken advantage of the nice weather March and early April have given them.
The good performances started right off the bat with the Hatboro Horsham duo of Sam Hibbs (15:24.21) and Conner Quinn (15:25.20) provided a cross country flash back for their opponents. Hibbs has been running strong since late indoor, while Quinn is coming off of an injury that cut his indoor season short. Hibbs and Quinn stayed alive with the front pack for a sub 10 minute 3200 meter split. Hibbs took control of the race in the final 800 meters, while Quinn came from the back of the lead pack to earn 2nd in the final 30 meters.
Another running coming back from a long layoff was Upper Moreland's Drew Magaha. This meet was his first invitational competition since his return from mono in January. Magaha was looking to run a qualifying time for the Penn Relays, and from the gun, Magaha took off, fighting the wind to take the lead early in the 1500 meter run. After a 400 meter split of 60 seconds, the wind started playing a factor in the race, as the 30+ MPH wind gusts was right in his face on the back stretch. After fighting the wind, the final lap showed that despite missing time, his speed is there, surging to a strong US#3 performance of 4:00.10. Magaha was certainly looking closer to the Magaha of old that dazzled the crowd at Shippensburg last spring at states.
Other highlights from the meet include a 1-2 finish from the Pennridge duo of Austin Kohler (PA#3 1:56.22) and Joey Logue (PA#4 1:57.53) in the 800 mete run and a 1-2 finish in the 3000 meter run from Sam Aziz (8:52.68) and Lyle Wistar (8:53.14) of Germantown Friends. Shacor Hamilton of Cardinal O'Hara proved that he can run fast no matter what lane he is in. Running on the outside lane (lane 7), Hamilton ran a PA#2 time of 10.83 to win the 100 meter dash and finisned 2nd in the 200 meter dash behind Ryan Hynes of Central Bucks South. Hynes ran 21.89, while Hamilton ran 21.91. Both times are PA#1 and PA#2 this season. Bensalem ran two impressive relays, running a PA#3 time of 8:03.19 to earn a wire to wire win in the 4x800 meter relay, and then capped off the afternoon with a PA#4 time of 3:25.39 to win the 4x400 meter relay. In the field, Seyram Avakame of Bensalem won the triple jump with a PA#2 mark of 47-11.25, and Corey Smith of Central Bucks West cleared 14-9 to win the pole vault.
