Katelyn Tuohy Takes Down Mary Cain's National Freshman Class 1K Record

Katelyn Tuohy broke the national freshman class record in the 1K today by running a time of 2:47.86 to win the Section 1 Class A Championship in New York. The prior record of 2:50.84 belonged to fellow New Yorker Mary Cain, who went on to rewrite the American prep distance running record book and sign a professional contract with Nike as a high school senior.

Tuohy, who goes to North Rockland High School, now owns the No. 1 time in the country this season ahead of Sammy Watson, whom many pegged to break the national record of 2:43.4 this year. Tuohy's previous personal best was 2:52.

The 1K record marks the second time that Tuohy has broken one of Cain's grade records. She bested Cain's New York state record in the mile for seventh-graders when she ran 4:58.4 at the Loucks Games in 2015.

The freshman will compete in the 4x400m relay on Saturday at the NYRR Millrose Games.
