Kate Murphy Pulls Out Of Wanamaker Mile

Kate Murphy is no longer listed on the Millrose Games entries, and Lake Braddock High School coach Mike Mangan confirmed that the star will not race this weekend in New York.

"Kate had a minor setback in training and not ready [to] race against pros," he said.

Murphy was last seen anchoring Lake Braddock to a new national high school record of 11:34.54 in the distance medley relay at the VA Showcase at Liberty University on Jan. 13. She split 4:37 for 1600m, but pulled out of a 1K race against Sammy Watson the next day.

She is expected to return to competition later this season. Murphy, a 4:07 1500m runner who competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials last summer, was to be the first high school girl to race the Wanamaker Mile since Alexa Efraimson in 2014. This year's race features two-time defending champion Shannon Rowbury, who could challenge the American record of 4:20.5, set in 1982 by Mary Slaney.

Murphy won the Millrose Games high school mile last year in a meet record time of 4:41.

The New York Road Runners (NYRR) announced the fields today for the Millrose Games Wanamaker Mile races. The professional men's and women's races are headlined by Clayton Murphy, Olympic bronze medalist in the 800m, and Shannon Rowbury, a two-time Wanamaker champion and American record holder in the 1500m and 5K. Six other Olympians are in the fields, as well as prep sensation Kate Murphy.

Murphy, a senior at Lake Braddock High School in Va., competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials last summer in the 1500m and owns a PB of 4:07.21. She won the Millrose Games High School Mile last year in a meet record of 4:41.84, and went on to run 4:39.47 (#6 all-time) for runner-up honors at indoor nationals behind future Ducks teammate Katie Rainsberger.

Kate Murphy after winning the Millrose Games High School Mile in 2016:

Murphy is the first high school girl to be invited to the Wanamaker Mile since Mary Cain in 2013 and Alexa Efraimson in 2014. Both of those performances resulted in record runs, as Cain set the national high school record of 4:28.25 when she placed second in 2013, and Efraimson ran No. 2 all-time 4:32.15 when she took sixth in 2014.

The men's field includes Drew Hunter of Virginia, who lowered his own national high school record in the mile at the 2016 Millrose Games from 3:58.25 to 3:57.81. This year will mark Hunter's first appearance in the Wanamaker Mile, as he ran his record in a separate elite section last year.
